Forest School is a long – term, student led, educational process. It is about exploring the natural world whilst thinking about the impact we are having on our environment. Forest School supports all areas of learning but explicitly social, emotional and physical development. Higher than average staff to child ratios are essential for challenging activities to take place, as manageable risk is encouraged.
Forest School works with small groups of children and those same children should attend sessions for the duration of the programme to ensure consistency. This is also why each session has the same structure, though activities are varied.. Sessions are a minimum of 1 ½ hours and provide all sorts of challenges. Many of these challenges require the use of natural materials sourced from woodland environments. Tasks are broken down into small, manageable chunks so that the children are not set up to fail. A Sparks Box is taken along to every session to ‘spark’ the children’s imaginations. Items include things like wooden pegs, mallets, string, chalk, charcoal, shells, pebbles, bug pots, mirrors and magnifying glasses.
